"On beautiful Prince Edward Island in Canada, the orphan Anne Shirley is mistakenly sent to Green Gables, home of Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, where she is adopted by them despite the misunderstanding. They initially don't know what to do, but as they are won over by Anne's imagination, their family bond deepens. As she meets her bosom friend Diana Barry and her constant rival Gilbert Blythe, and comes into contact with her classmates and teachers, Anne grows from a girl into a young woman.

What a delightful little chow this is! I never saw the 70's version, though I've since read up on it cursorily to know it had somewhat of a following in postwar Japan, for whatever reason. No idea if this is a remake, though the story thus far suggests as much, but it gets everything right. Whimsical, grounded, cute, distinct, relatable, introspective, and heartwarming. If ghibli did TV animation... this. I'm sure I must have been workin' the guns something fierce since I had manly sweat coming out of my eye when the father said they'd instead be 'good for her'.

What amazes most is how easily Anne could have been absolutely annoying, yet she is so much more endearing as a child character because she's inquisitive, but not precocious or disrespectful; just imaginative. I suspect mild turrets with how she blurts her ideas out. I was both saddened and tickled during her introduction to the mother at the door where she broke down to cry at not being wanted while seamlessly inviting herself in to take a seat and pout on the table as though she had always lived there. Brilliant characterization that never lets up. This is also seen later when she's apologizing to the biddy neighbor. It may not be the flashiest show of the season, but it's my current favorite.

Also, normie approved.
